Title: TTA and Kyon Canine Hip Replacement Systems Conference In Boston
Date: 4/21/07

Detail: VSCD Doctors at Boston Conference

TTA – On April 21, 2007 VSCD surgeon Dr. Gregory S. Marsolais attended a Kyon conference in Boston in which the TTA and the Kyon canine hip replacement systems were discussed intensely.  This very informative lecture consortium provided valuable insight and ‘pearls’ for the veterinary surgeon undertaking these highly technical procedures.

VSCD is pleased to have both doctors Kim R. Carlson and Gregory S. Marsolais.  Dr. Carlson trained under the highly respected veterinary surgeon Randy Boudrieau at Tufts College of Veterinary Medicine.  During her training, Dr. Carlson was trained extensively in the TTA methodology and few veterinary surgeons on the west coast have performed as many TTA’s as her.  Dr. Carlson is available in our Berkeley offices to discuss your pet’s TTA candidacy!

TTA for Cranial Cruciate Deficiency in Dogs (ie. Ruptured ACL)

Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA), a new surgical method for treating dogs with deficient cranial cruciate ligament, was developed at the U. of Zurich, by Dr. Slobodan Tepic and Prof. Pierre Montavon (http://www.kyon.ch/), where most of the first 150 cases were treated during ‘02/’03. Early in 2004 the system was released into a controlled clinical use by 20 surgeons in the US and as many in Europe and Asia. TTA is currently practiced by over 300 surgeons.

About 15,000 dogs have been operated by now using the original Kyon system. TTA – advancing tibial insertion of the patellar ligament cranially by a predetermined amount so as to place the ligament at 90 degrees to the tibial plateau with the knee extended - leads to only a slight modification of the geometry of the knee, yet it renders it stable throughout its functional range. Morbidity of the method is low, facilitating a fast recovery to function.

Dr. Marsolais studied under Dr. Jeff Peck at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Florida (http://www.avsspecialists.com/) and has a publication (in-press) on the Kyon canine hip replacement.  Dr. Peck is considered the North American ‘leader’ in this hip replacement system, and we are very pleased that Dr. Marsolais has brought that expertise to Northern California!  Dr. Marsolais is available in our Dublin/Tri-Valley facility to discuss your dog’s candidacy for hip replacement!
