BFX – On May 7 -8, 2007, VSCD in cooperation with Dr.
Gary S. Brown (Veterinary Orthopedic and Surgery Service; http://www.vetortho.com/)
and Dr. Andy Frey (Animal Referral Center; Manteca, California)
hosted Dr. Terri Schiller and her husband Rick Schiller for another
exciting round of total hip replacements using the most innovative
techniques available.
Dr. Schiller has her own referral
hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia (http://www.accg.com/)
and was fortunate to train at North Carolina State University
College of Veterinary Medicine during the years of development
for the porous coated hip replacement system. At the time,
Howmedica was developing a human system of hip replacement which
would no longer require adhesive (methylmethacralate) to be stable. This ‘so-called’ biological
fixation system was designed to be better ‘accepted’ by
the body, more durable over time and most accurately reproduce ‘normal’ biology
(normal vascularity). This system although designed for
dogs was never commercially available, so most veterinary surgeons
have very limited training with it.
However, since Dr.
Schiller and her husband Rick were part of the original design
and implantation team, their experience is broad, and unmatched. In
the late 1990’s the porous coated technology was acquired
by Biomedtrix a veterinary orthopedic company in the total hip
replacement development business for over 25 years (www.biomedtrix.com). In
cooperation with surgeons such as Dr. Schiller, Biomedtrix has
pioneered the advancement of porous coated joint replacement
in dogs, and the BFX system is result of their efforts. During
the these two days in May this assemblage of surgeons was successful
in placing 4 total hip replacements in as many dogs! VSCD
is very proud of its affiliations with Dr. Schiller, Dr. Brown
and Dr. Frey and the many successful results of these cooperative
efforts.
